Armed Guard in Fatigues Causes Alarm

In this week's roundup of police activities, burglaries, false alarms, noise complaints and a small fire.

October 18

3:30 p.m. – An employee of reported receiving customer complaints of a solicitor asking for money outside the store. An officer responded and asked the solicitor to move elsewhere in the parking lot to comply with the store’s policy.

11:14 p.m. – A resident reported seeing the door of open with a white utility van and men in the area. An officer responded and contacted the men, who were workers for D&D Video setting up overhead projectors at the school.

October 19

2:41 p.m. - A resident of Mirabel Avenue called to report that a car had hit his mailbox and that construction workers across the street saw it happen. The vehicle that hit the mailbox then parked on Ethel, and the caller had the vehicle’s side mirror. An officer made contact with the driver of the involved vehicle and provided the caller with insurance information. The parties agreed to work to fix mailbox and fence.

4:33 p.m. – A residents who owns two properties on the 200 block of Miller Ave. reported having an ongoing issue with people cutting down flowers on his properties.

October 20

9:51 a.m. – A resident reported seeing a man walk by the on Miller with a gun on his thigh, and another caller reported second-hand information about a man wearing combat fatigues with a gun in a holster and walking behind the Whole Foods, near the Precious Metals store. Police responded and contacted the man, who is the armed security guard for Precious Metals, which was . The guard had a permit for the gun and police advised him to make sure that the firearm is concealed and in a holster.

12 p.m. – A resident of Sarah Drive reported arriving home and finding that it had been burglarized sometime between 8:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., with three laptop computers and a jewelry box stolen. 

October 21

8:05 a.m. - A resident of Sarah Drive reported that a man was camping at the edge of her driveway. The resident gave police a description of the man and his vehicle, saying she saw him at 10 p.m. and believed he spent the night. An officer responded and contacted the man, who consented to a search and background check. The man, who was from Apalachin, N.Y., was cleared and escorted to the freeway.

10:44 a.m. – A Tam High staff member reported to police that two students had been detained for possession of marijuana. Both students cooperated with school administrators and were cited and released at the scene. Fourty-five minutes later, school staff reported that a student was found with packaged marijuana. Police cited the student for sale of marijuana and released to school administrators.

October 22

8:20 a.m. - A resident of Longfellow Road called police to report that a neighbor was using power tools before 9 a.m., in violation of the city’s noise ordinance. The caller said it was the fourth time the neighbor had done this. An officer responded and found no power tools being used.

11:23 a.m. – A resident of Magdalena Court reported that a neighbor’s contractor was sawing and doing other work. The resident said the neighbor has been asked repeatedly not to do work on his on Saturdays. An officer responded and the work was stopped.

October 23

8:59 p.m. – A small fire started in the backyard of a homer on Robertson Terrace about 20 feet from the building and 5-foot-tall trees surrounding it about just three feet from a wooden fence. A police officer arrived to find the compost pile as the source of fire, as the resident had placed ashes on the pile in the morning from a previous evening fire. The resident put out the fire. 

9:19 p.m. – A resident called police to report a group of kids playing baseball and making noise in the tennis court area at . An officer contacted the kids, who were wrapping up the last inning and said they were sorry.

October 24

12:25 p.m. - A business owner on Camino Alto reported that he left his sandwich board sign outside after he closed the day before and that it was gone when he opened today. Officers checked area but unable to locate sign.
