Chicken Prices to Cluck at...at Mill Valley Market

Today after school, my daughter and I were downtown and decided we'd make chicken piccata for dinner. We rolled into the butcher at Mill Valley Market and spotted our fancy: Mary's Organic Boneless, Skinless chicken breast. I ordered two and was handed the wrapped package. I glanced at the price….$18.50!!!!! Wha????? Since when is the lowly chicken more than my wild salmon or organic beef? I asked if there was a mistake and was told it costs $12.69 per pound! I asked if that was a joke; it's even cheaper at Whole Foods. Not a joke, and I was sweetly pointed to the alternative…non-organic Fulton Farms.
I declined and we traipsed over to Whole Foods which is actually closer to our house. Same exact chicken? Wait for it……..
$8.99 per pound!
I'm speechless and still trying to wrap my head around how MV Market can justify not just being pricier than Whole Paycheck, but by more than 40%…..unless I've got my math wrong but either way they've lost my business with that type of markup.
