Mill Valley Library to debut financial literacy lecture series

Mill Valley, Calif.— As part of its ongoing mission to offer opportunities for knowledge and personal enrichment, the Mill Valley Public Library is pleased to announce the introduction of a new lecture series aimed at enhancing attendees' understanding of personal finance. From how to raise money-smart kids to the basics of the burgeoning field of impact investing, and more, the Financial Literacy Series will feature financial planners and investment gurus sharing their expertise on an eclectic array of financial topics.

The new series is a four-part lecture series that will run from January through April 2014, with one financial literacy lecture taking place each month. The series is free and open to the public and it debuts Wednesday, January 22nd with a lecture entitled "Emotions and Money." Marin-based financial planner Jeff Stoffer explains that how we were raised and the financial events that have taken place in our lives influence our spending choices, often in unconscious ways. In a hands-on workshop, Stoffer will present an engaging look at our relationship with money and whether or not we apply it toward our top values and priorities.

Additional events in the series include "Raising Financially Fit Kids" on February 27th, "Behavioral Finance from Theory to Practice" on March 19th, and "Impact Investing" on April 24th. Financial planner Tanya Steinhofer will lead the February session and will cover such topics as family money values, ways to approach allowances, and basic money skills. During the March session, portfolio manager Kenneth Broad will provide a behavioral perspective on investing, including how understanding behavioral biases is an important step towards becoming a better investor. Finally, financial investing experts David Philipp and Monica Miller will offer April attendees an introduction to impact investing, an area of investing that can provide financial returns while also enhancing such social causes as education, sustainable energy, food security, and healthcare.

"We designed this series to address topics that we thought would resonate with our local community," said City Librarian Anji Brenner.

All events in the Financial Literacy Series begin at 7:00 pm in the Creekside Room of the Mill Valley Public Library. The series is free and open to adults and high school students, no registration required.
