Welcome back to Marinhood, The Ultimate Kids Events Round-Up In Marin And Beyond!

In May 2011, California State Parks  in order to meet budget reductions. State Parks anticipates full park closures related to the proposed budget reductions will occur by July 2012.

Some parks which means that State Parks’ operations at those parks will stop but others are assuming some or all of the operations to keep them open on some level. For instance, . Only nine out of the 70 parks have partnerships in place at this point, but others have negotiations in progress toward deals that will hopefully become workable and final.

Looking at the list, they include many of my favorite places. Be sure to bring your children to visit these beautiful park before they are closed until the state opens them again to the public. Some of great parks on the closure list nearby include:

And since we are on the subject of supporting our parks - The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy has a new program called Park Academy. Class subjects range from botany to lichens to birds. These fabulous classes are given as a special perk for volunteers, members, and employees. They have many opportunities to volunteer with your family &/or become a member today!

Want to take your kids to the White House Easter Egg Roll in Washington D.C. this year? You'll have to enter an online lottery for free tickets. Visit the website March 1 for information on how you can enter the lottery for tickets to the 2012 White House Easter Egg Roll. The event is open to children ages 12 and younger, and their families.

Owl Wars, Muir Woods marks the southern front in a battle for survival between two competing owl species. On this strenuous five-mile dusk hike, we will look and listen for the owls that call Muir Woods home, learn more about their history and ecology, and receive the latest research updates on our most famous resident, the spotted owl. Find out how the barred owl emerged as a potent threat in our own backyard. Meet Steffen Bartschat at the entrance to Muir Woods National Monument. No dogs. Marin Theatre Company’s Anansi the Spider, Enjoy vibrant live theatre in the library’s Main Reading Room before the library opens. Mill Valley Library.

Family Birding and Nest Box Building, 9am – 12pm, Are you interested in birding and want to get your kids involved? The ponds at the Las Gallinas are a fabulous place to get close looks at a variety of species. Rangers will teach birding basics while identifying common species. Afterwards, participants are invited to McInnis Park to construct swallow nesting boxes for placement in the park or the backyard. Coho Salmon at Muir Beach, 9-11am, The Redwood Creek Restoration at Muir Beach improves wildlife habitat and the creek and wetlands ecosystem. Learn about the history and current status of coho salmon in Redwood Creek on this easy, two-mile walk around the restoration site. Bring water and a light snack; wear sturdy shoes with good treads. RSVP by calling (415) 388-2596.

North Indian Dance, 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm, The Chitresh Das Dance Company performs Kathak dance, one of the eight forms of Indian classical dances, which originated from Uttar Pradesh, India. Drop-In Art Making: Green Groggers, 1-3pm This hands-on fun inspires visitors to learn more about the exhibitions on display, the building’s architecture, or Jewish holidays and traditions, while experimenting with materials and art techniques. Use recycled materials to create your own “green” groggers (a type of noise-maker commonly sounded during—but not limited to—Purim holiday celebrations). Contemporary Jewish Museum.

Children’s Program at Green Gulch, After a short talk, the children leave the zendo to participate in their own special programs. Activities include crafts, seasonal projects on the farm and garden, yoga, and ritual. The program is regularly held on the first Sunday of each month (except the first Sunday in December). The Wizard of Oz, 9:30 & 11 a.m. Whisked off to the magical land of Oz, Dorothy goes searching for a Wizard and makes friends along the way. Muir Woods After Hours, 6:30-8:30pm, Explore the evening magic of Muir Woods, learning about the secret nightlife of an old-growth redwood forest. This special walk begins one hour before sunset and will conclude with the dark of night! We'll listen for owls, look for bats, and use our senses to guide us along the trails. This is an easy, two-mile walk on paved trail. Nature for Kids at Baltimore Canyon, 10am – 1pm, The early flowers here should be alive with an assortment of insects, the local lizards will be coming out of their winter hiding places, and if we go down into the canyon we can visit an amazing waterfall and hunt for salamanders in the redwood forest along the creek. Run for the Seals, fun community event and is one of the Center’s biggest fundraisers held throughout the year. The event boasts two beautiful routes: a hilly 4-mile run and a leisurely 2-mile walk. Both wind through the picturesque Marin Headlands with ocean views.

2012 Royal Ball: Destination China, Fairy Tales do come true as JDRF presents the premier gala for children and their families, complete with dinner, live and silent auctions, and family friendly entertainment. The Royal Ball is a wonderful adventure for the entire family where children and adults partake in an enchanting adventure together. The Royal Ball began in 2008 with the theme of princesses and pirates. As we enter our 4th year, the Royal Ball is traveling to the Far East and we are destined for China. Tyke Explorers Workshop, The Secret Garden, Season for Sprouts, (10am, 12pm or 3pm) What do tiny sprouts need to grow? Explore the necessities for plants to grow and how different parts of a plant support its needs. Investigate the reasons for the seasons in one year and how that relates to our leafy green friends. March 14, Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest planets in the sky, will be within 3 degrees of each other in the evening sky. 

St. Patrick's Day Tea, 9:45-11am, FREE, Come join SRD for a morning of Celtic music from Michael the Great Pretender. Sip on a lovely cup of tea and snack on little cookies and cakes. This performance will be held after the Wednesday morning aerobics class, so mark your calendar and join us for a morning Irish-American tradition. Nature for Kids at Cascade Canyon, 10am – 1pm, We will make our way up the canyon to look at the insects and other animals that flourish in the clean water of upper San Anselmo Creek. Pi Day, 1 pm – 3:30 pm, The number is Pi (π), 3.1415926535…ad infinitum. It’s the number you get when you divide the circumference of a circle by its diameter. It’s also the date and time of festivities at the Exploratorium and a special occasion to celebrate some of the Exploratorium’s quirky scientific traditions before the museum moves to Pier 15 in 2013.

Mothers and Sons: Raising Emotionally-Strong Boys (2 – 10 years)
Mothers can be a strong influence on their sons’ emotional growth. Yet often the mixed messages around raising boys leave moms confused and needing clear direction. India Comes Alive with Music, Dance and Art! March 16 through 18, 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm, North Court, Teachers from the Milpitas Indian Community Center introduce India's cultural festivals, dance traditions, and art activities. Learn to dance bhangra like a Bollywood star, make a traditional drum, or create your own colorful floor art. This program is offered in partnership with the India Community Center.
