Fire Burns About 1 Acre on Mt. Tam

Woodacre, CA – Marin County fire crews spent the night of July 4-5 battling a wildland fire on Mount Tamalpais, and about 80 personnel held it to roughly one acre, according to the Marin County Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it does not appear that fireworks were involved. Investigators from Cal Fire and Marin County Fire were working at the scene today to examine possible causes.

The blaze was near Kentfield, off the Indian Fire Road and Hoo Koo E Koo trails, and started next to a fuel-break area that was created by the Tam Fire Crew in 2006. As the fire spread, it was slowed considerably because of the fuel modification efforts in the area.

The fire was fully contained at 7 a.m. this morning. Aided by daylight and GPS mapping, fire officials confirmed the size of the burned area to be about one acre. Crews were to continue to mop up hot spots throughout the day.

No structures were damaged, no evacuations were ordered and there were no reported injuries. Crown Road was temporarily closed to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles.

Multiple emergency calls were made at 9:33 p.m. July 4 to report smoke and flames on Mt. Tam. A full response was initiated from multiple fire departments in the area, including the Marin County Fire Department, Cal Fire, Kentfield, Larkspur, Novato, Ross Valley, Stinson Beach, the Marin Municipal Water District and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Eight engines, one bulldozer, three water tenders and three hand crews worked at the scene. Marin County Fire Chief Jason Weber said the rugged terrain presented challenges to the crews.

“It was good that we held the fire to one acre because the winds were strong all night,” Weber said.
