County's Housing Element Workshop Materials Now Online

Marin County planners are moving into the next phase  to draft a housing plan for homes at all income levels in unincorporated areas of Marin and are providing new reading material for those interested in the topic.

Workshop materials are now online from five community workshops, held in April and May, about the housing element update to the Countywide Plan. The workshop information includes the presentation and videos shown at the beginning of each workshop, materials provided for a planning exercise, written feedback from participants and summaries of large-group discussions.

At each of the five workshops, County staff received valuable insight and advice about the update process about meeting housing needs. The input, along with the feedback received from the 2014 Marin Housing Survey and other sources, will be provided to County decision-makers to help inform how our community will plan for housing in unincorporated Marin.

The next housing element update is required to plan for significantly fewer homes than the previous update. The 2014-2023 housing plan, with a minimum of 185 homes at all income levels, will replace the current housing plan. The 2007-2014 update was certified by the California State Department of Housing and Community Development in December 2013.

County staff has moved into the next phase of the update process by beginning a draft of the next housing element. This new plan will be presented to the Marin County Planning Commission at public hearings later this summer, followed by hearings with the Marin County Board of Supervisors by this winter. A Board-adopted plan is required to be submitted to the state by Jan. 31, 2015 for certification. The public is encouraged to share perspectives and input before and during the hearings.
