Susan G. Komen Walk Makes Final Lap Through Mill Valley

The three-day, 60-mile walk that raises money for breast cancer has been canceled in six regions nationwide, including San Francisco. This was the last year.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day fundraising walk made its final lap through Mill Valley on Friday, with hundreds of women (and men) turning out in the fight against breast cancer.

The 60-mile, three-day walk, in which participants raise money for breast cancer research and prevention, was canceled in the Bay Area and six other regions nationwide because of low participation and donation rates, Komen officials announced in early June. The 2012 walk raised $2.4 million, according to the organization.

The walk will still be held in seven other regions – Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Michigan, Philadelphia, San Diego, Seattle and the Twin Cities. Participants are required to raise at least $2,300 for the cause.

“For those of us who have walked this event multiple times it makes this June 21-23 walk even more important,” Mill Valley participant Cathy Youngling said before the event. “In the past I have seen our community less than present during our walk through Marin. Having walked in multiple other cities the comparison wasn’t always favorable. But I am a Cancer survivor from Marin. It is my home. It is also the home of a higher rate of Breast Cancer than many other areas. I want this county to be pink on June 21st."

At Alain Pinel Realtors, where Youngling works, employees dressed in bell bottoms and wigs, and handed out beads, feathered boas and masks to the walkers. The Sequoia Theater also posted "Go Walkers" on its marquee.

The walkers made their way from Lomita, to Blithedale, up Thockmorton to Old Mill Park, on to Miller, La Goma and Sycamore, then on to the Middle School to the MV/Sausalito Bike path to 100 Shoreline Office Center and into Sausalito.
