Film Review: AFTER EARTH

AFTER EARTH is fear-driven, but Fear Not to experience it! - Beau Behan

AFTER EARTHBeau Behan
Stars: Jaden Smith, Will Smith
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan
PG-13, 100 min, Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

SONY made the decision of hiding the director’s name, M. Night Shyamalan in the marketing materials. Instead, they have accentuated that   "After Earth" is another showcase of father/son collaboration between Will Smith and Jaden Smith. The other previous occasion was in the 2006 box-office hit,   "The Pursuit of Happyness" . Any hint of elusiveness for its true   raisons d'etre  is debatable. Clearly, Shyamalan is a director-for-hire in this movie, and it does not reflect any of his twister techniques like those of the "The Sixth Sense". Rather, ensconced in a cavalier nature with the trappings of a post-apocalyptic sci-fi narrative, it is a straightforward father/son survival story in an adventure setting of 1,000 plus years into the future.

The story begins on a planet where mankind has taken sanctuary. Earth has become oblivion, but not quite the same as Tom Cruise’s "Oblivion". It is not desolate, but for some reasons unknown, its oxygen level can no longer sustain human existence, and it is now overrun by huge baboons, gigantic birds, tigers and leeches. Make no mistake—it is not the  "Planet of the Apes" either.....
