$50, $40 OHCA members. $5 materials fee.
Take something -- a drawing, poem or work of art -- and edit or alter it multiple times to create a new version that culminates into an original work that still recalls the previous life of the item! This class focuses on work that leaves a trace and incorporates absence and deletion as part of its process and into the final pieces of artwork. We will explore the definition and meaning of a palimpsest, along with artists using this in their work. Participants will create palimpsests incorporating drawings and/or poems in which lines, forms, shapes and language have been heavily altered, erased and/or drawn into different forms. Methods for deleting, altering and erasing imagery will be discussed and demonstrated. Artists and writers explored in this class include: Luc Tuymans, Alvin Lucier, Sol Lewitt, William deKooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank O'hara, Emily Dickinson, and Jenny Holzer. Students are welcome to bring in source material --drawings, poems, etc. Future classes may offer sound demonstrations and alterations as part of the class. RSVP by October 16
