Golden Gate Opera: Hansel and Gretel

In this fourth annual festive
production, Marin County’s Golden Gate Opera presents the famous fairy tale
opera, Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel in the Marin Civic Center's
intimate Marin Showcase Theatre, with professional opera singers, Shan-Yee Poon
Ballet School dancers and Singers Marin Youth Choruses. Children are invited to
attend in the audience in costume and take part in the on-stage costume parade
during intermission as a celebration of Halloween and National Opera Week.

Hansel and Gretel is one of the most
famous fairy tales in the world. It has become a Golden Gate Opera tradition to
present this opera as a clever comedy to coincide with Halloween as a festive
and fun event for the whole family.

Golden Gate Opera’s Hansel and
Gretel is suitable for children ages 3 and up, but adults also enjoy it,
especially for the gorgeous music by 19th Century composer Engelbert
Humperdinck. (The Golden Gate Opera performance is sung in English.)

Golden Gate Opera’s stellar cast
returns to this year’s production starring, with Mezzo-soprano Alexandra
Jerinic as Hansel and soprano Suzanna Mizell as Gretel. Maestro Robert Ashens
is conductor and music director. Also returning are Miwako Isano as The
Sandman, Jacqueline Goldgorin as The Dew Fairy and Roberta Wain Becker as a
funny Wicked Witch and Gabriel Manro, baritone as The Father, well known to
Marin County audiences for his portrayal of Abe Lincoln in GGO‘s 2012 new work,
“Lincoln and Booth”.

Children of Shan-Yee Poon Ballet School return from Golden Gate Opera’s 2010
production, dancing the roles of Forest Sprites, Guardian Angels, Witch’s
Helpers, Little Witches, Cats and Magic Candy Canes. A chorus of local children
will perform as the Enchanted Gingerbread Cookie Children. Robert Ashens is
music director-conductor and provides pianistic orchestration. Edna Garagedian
directs.

Golden Gate Opera has also brought
this production to schools and received hundreds of letters from local children
with touching comments of appreciation. Those children who enjoyed the school
performance will love the full production, and those who have never been to an
opera will come away from their experience sure in the knowledge that even
children can overcome evil.

Hansel and Gretel liberate all the
Gingerbread Children that had been held captive. It’s inspiring to see a
production in which right triumphs and children are heroes.

GGO’s Hansel and Gretel fairy tale
costumes are designed by Marin County’s Tracy Bell Redig, and Andrea Pino is
Make up-Designer. Staging will be by international opera star Edna Garabedien.
Colorful storybook sets are a co-production of Golden Gate Opera and the
California Opera Association. Running time is two hours, with a 20-minute intermission.
PARKING IS FREE.
