Buddhist Basics: A Five-Part Course

Local Buddhism scholar Catherine Shaw will conduct a five-part course on Buddhist Basics, beginning Thursday, Mar. 7 at 7:30pm and running through Apr. 11, at the Buddhist Temple of Marin in Mill Valley.  Registration for the course is required by Feb. 28, and a fee of $40 will be collected at the first class.

In this course, Ms. Shaw will examine the life and teachings of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, how the Buddha dharma developed throughout India and beyond, and how Buddhism has adapted to the various cultures as it spread across Asia and now into the modern world.  The classes run on the evenings of Mar. 7, Mar. 14, Mar. 21, Apr. 4 and Apr. 11.

Catherine Shaw has been a member of the Buddhist Temple of Marin since 1985.  She first encountered Buddhism while in high school, and later intensified her Buddhist studies at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado.  Back in the Bay Area, Ms. Shaw studied Nyingma Buddhism under Lama Gonpa Tseden, Rinpoche, and then received her M.A. degree in Buddhist Studies from the Institute of Buddhist Studies in 2000.
