Art Lecture - The Cultivated Life: Gardens as Symbol and Reality

This illustrated talk will offer an engaging thematic survey of the history of garden and landscape design from ancient to modern times. Dr. Leslie Ross, Chair of Art History at Dominican University of California, will explore the many ways in which human cultivation and manipulation of the natural world can be seen as indicative of social, political, and religious values and concerns. From the Garden of Eden to contemporary environmental art, the treatment of the landscape is an excellent lens through which to view and analyze the attitudes of humans toward the world of nature.
