UPDATE: 103 Evacuated During Three-Alarm Fire at Shelter Hill Apartments

The apartment complex fire consumed two units that were under renovation and nearly "move-in" ready.

Firefighters in Mill Valley battled a three-alarm structure fire early Sunday morning that temporarily displaced roughly 100 residents, according to fire officials.

Crews responded to a report of a fire at 16 Miwok Way, at the Shelter Hill Apartments, at about 3 a.m., officials said.

Mill Valley Battalion Chief Tom Welch said the fire scorched two units in the apartment complex that had been under renovation and were expected to be “move-in ready” within days.

More than 30 firefighters responded to the scene and it took crews roughly 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Fire officials evacuated 103 people from the “north” and “central” towers in the complex for a short time during the initial evaluation of the fire, Welch said.

No one was injured in the incident, Welch said.

Preliminary reports estimate the amount of damage at $250,000, Welch said. The cause is undetermined and under investigation, but the investigation includes looking at electrical issues, he said.

Mill Valley resident and Twitter user Scott Wong posted a video of some of the emergency vehicles in the area for the fire.
