This Weekend in Mill Valley: Oct. 15-17

Mill Valley Film Fest closes with a delightful lineup while a new play enjoys a world premiere.

The spotlight stays on Mill Valley this weekend as the Mill Valley Film Festival comes to a conclusion with a flurry of screenings, parties and concerts. But the while the festival dominates our downtown for these 11 days in October, there's plenty of other events going on, from the world premiere of a new play to a baby gear bonanza at the Mill Valley Community Center. And if staying indoors during this absolutely gorgeous weather makes you guilty, there are no shortage of reasons to get outside.

There's still time to experience the cutting edge of cinema at the 33rd Mill Valley Film Festival, which closes Sunday at CineArts at Sequoia with The Debt, the story of a Mossad agent and grandmother (played by Helen Mirren) plagued by a secret she shares with two men.

The other closing night event centers on 127 Hours, which depicts the real-life saga of Aron Ralston, whose solo hiking trip in remote southern Utah morphed into a tale of horror when he had to cut of his arm in order to get out from under a boulder that had fallen on him. It was directed by Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and based on Ralston's own account, Between a Rock and a Hard Place. Franco and Boyle will appear at the screening at the Rafael Film Center.
