Surprise Scorcher Sparks Heat Advisory

Temperatures could rise well into the triple digits today, but will cool off starting Thursday.

At the tail end of one of the coolest summers in recent memory, Mill Valley is in the midst of surprise scorcher. A heat advisory is in effect today through 8pm as temperatures are projected to rise as high as 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

"It's getting rather toasty around here yesterday and today," said Diana Henderson, a forecaster with the National Weather Service's Bay Area weather forecast office.

Police Capt. Jim Wickham said the department hasn't had any heat-related calls this morning or yesterday, and fire department officials said the same.

The hot temperatures won't last for long, said Henderson, as the low-lying morning fog and patchy clouds will return by the weekend.

The weather service doesn't record record temperatures for Mill Valley specifically, but San Rafael recorded a record temperature of 97 degrees on Monday. The previous record for Aug. 23 was 94 in 1974.

The record temp for Aug. 24 in San Rafael was 94 degrees, and is projected to easily surpass that today with a high of 101.

"It will continue to be very warm for the next couple of days and then back to what it was last week," Henderson said.
