The City of Mill Valley Department of Public Works is working closely with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) on an upcoming pipeline replacement project in the Downtown area of Mill Valley.
The purpose of this project is to enhance gas service to PG&E customers by replacing the gas lines with modern piping that is more resistant to corrosion and earth movement. The replacement pipes will create a safer and more reliable natural gas system.

In early February, PG&E personnel will begin marking and preparing the downtown area for construction, which is planned to begin in the last half of February and continue through July 2014.

Excavation and pipe replacement will take place on:
Throckmorton Avenue - from the East/West Blithedale intersection to just beyond Madrona Street.
Corte Madera Avenue – from Throckmorton Avenue to just beyond Lower Alcatraz Place.
Lovell Avenue – from Corte Madera Avenue to just beyond Madrona Street.
Lower Alcatraz Place – 3/4th of the street starting from Corte Madera Avenue.
Bernard Street – the first third of the street starting from Throckmorton Avenue.
Madrona Street – the first third of the street starting from Throckmorton Avenue.
Gardner Street - From West Blithedale Avenue to Corte Madera Avenue.
In order to minimize impacts from the construction project, PG&E plans to coordinate the construction with a phased approach so that only targeted sections will be under construction at any given time.
To further lessen the impacts during construction, PG&E representatives have conducted neighborhood outreach and are available to work business and residential customers to keep them informed of the project and to mitigate specific concerns such as driveway access, parking, and disruptions to gas service. Additionally, PG&E staff and contractors will also use an off-site staging area to minimize the numbers of trucks and heavy equipment on the impacted streets, and construction workers will use, when possible, boring techniques to minimize disruptions to the roadway. All construction areas will have highly visible signage placed in advance to inform drivers of changes to roadway configurations.
PG&E and City staff are making every effort to mitigate traffic impacts during construction in the downtown area and are working with the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce to notify local businesses and residents of the planned work. The City is also working closely with PG&E to ensure that the construction work will not affect emergency vehicle access or response times.
