The Ford Crown Victoria, the police car most of us recognize on City streets, is no longer being produced.  Dodge Chargers have replaced the Ford Crown Victoria, but many Public Safety personnel find that they do not accommodate taller officers, especially when loaded with the typical 20 pounds of gear they are required to wear. The Dodge Chargers are also very fuel consumptive, and have smaller space in both the back seat and the cargo area.

The Mill Valley Police Department has recently acquired a new specialty law enforcement designed Ford Explorer. Most local law enforcement agencies, including  California Highway Patrol, the Marin County Sheriff’s Department, and Police Departments in San Rafael, Novato, and Sausalito are adopting this model.

Police personnel cite several reasons for acquiring the Ford Explorer.  They include a more fuel efficient V6 engine, safer handling, and additional space in the front for taller officers and important equipment.  There is also more room in the back seat and a larger cargo area for emergency equipment, such as fire equipment, first-aid and defibrillator, pursuit intervention equipment, and more.

“We are really looking forward to adding this newer model vehicle to our fleet," said Police Chief Angel Bernal. "We feel it will enhance the climate of security within the community and heighten our ability to provide public safety services.”

We invite you to come check out the new Public Safety vehicle - Come by the Community Center before the Community Meeting at 5:45 pm today.  We look forward to seeing you there!
