Winterfest Brings Ice Rink to Depot Plaza Sunday

Second day of weekend-long holiday event features a 1,200-square foot ice skating rink, along with Santa, treats and a tree lighting ceremony.

Mill Valley gets as close as it ever will to the frozen tundra Sunday as the two-day event drops an ice skating rink onto for the day.

On the heels of Saturday’s day-long music event, Sunday features a lineup more in line with traditional Winterfest celebrations, although the snow of past years has been ditched in favor of ice skating.

A 1,200-square-foot synthetic ice skating rink is being constructed on Depot Plaza early Sunday – the parking lot will be closed all day – and residents can ice skate for free from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to event organizer Ken Brooks. Rental skates are available at no charge, compliments of the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce, Piazza D’Angelo’s, Bank of Marin and local merchants.

The event also features complimentary pasta, holiday beverages and chestnuts on an open fire from Piazza D’Angelo’s starting at noon. At 2 p.m., Santa Claus is set to arrive on a La France fire truck and stays until 4 p.m.
