Readers Say Buckeye Roadhouse Has the Best Steak in Town

Restaurant near the southern tip of the 94941 has been serving up prime cuts of steak for 75 years, and readers say it's still the best.

Since 1937 and with nary an interruption, the  has been the place to be for steak lovers in southern Marin.

When Tyler Florence and Sammy Hagar  in March 2011, the celebrity duo upped the ante for steak lovers, drawing rave reviews and a slew of publicity for reviving the 65-year-old downtown haunt with a heavy focus on steak.

If you (and we did), the Buckeye is faring just fine with the heightened competition. The restaurant near the southern tip of the 94941 won our Readers' Choice contest for best steak in town going away, snagging both the most votes in our poll and the most positive ratings and reviews on its page in our Places directory.

Co-owner Peter Schumacher chalks up Buckeye's reputation to consistency, attention to detail and avoiding complacency. He notes that chef and partner Robert Price has been at Buckeye for 10 years, and stability among the kitche staff has been vital.

"We never rest on our laurels, we double check our work and we treat our people well," Schumacher says.

As for the uptick in local competition, Schumacher says it's nothing but a good thing.

"It helps make Mill Valley the restaurant hub of Marin," he says. "There is room for all of us to be here and do well, and Tyler and Sammy have only helped further that."
