Anti-Veal Activists Protest Rep. Pelosi at Mill Valley's Piatti Restaurant

A small group of protesters targeted local restaurant, for which House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is an investor.

Nine activists from San Rafael animal rights group In Defense of Animals protested outside Piatti Restaurant in Mill Valley Wednesday afternoon to castigate House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for allowing the sale of veal at four restaurants in which she is invests.

Pelosi is an investor in the San Rafael-based Moana Restaurant Group, which also owns Piatti restaurants in La Jolla, Calif., and Denver, Colo., as well as The Quarry in San Antonio, Texas.

Protesters gathered outside Piatti Wednesday "to urge one of America’s most powerful 'progressive' politicians to align her public persona with her personal ventures by removing veal from all of her restaurants," according to Christy Griffin, the organization's special projects officer.

The group announced Wednesday that if Pelosi does not immediately adopt a "No Veal Policy," it will organize protests at all of her restaurants that serve veal. The group has sent Pelosi nearly 8,000 faxes asking her to adopt a No Veal policy at all of her restaurants, Griffin said.

“If Nancy Pelosi is comfortable with serving veal at her restaurants, she should display some integrity and transparency by opening these ‘Green’ veal operations to the public and personally showing everyone the 'environmental' way to confine and kill a baby calf,” said Joe Haptas, IDA’s executive director, in a statement.
