Alto Plaza Restaurant Round-up

Eateries offer diners eclectic mix of food choices

The arrival of Whole Foods has turned the spotlight on the Blithedale shopping center, home to a number of restaurants in Alto Shopping Plaza that offer a mix of fill-ya-up-fast staples. You will see everyone in Mill Valley here, from day laborers and school kids to off-hours dads and supplicants on their way to the mosque.

Caffé Oggi

From 7:30 am when the doors open on weekdays, expect a queue for the fresh pastries, omelettes and wonderfully aromatic coffees of this Italianate café.  Although it is not on the menu, ask for a 'corto' and you will get one as it is served at every standing coffee stall in Rome, punto. Focaccia sandwiches are a house specialty but the fresh pastas are oh-so fine and the vegetable plate is a cornucopia of local and seasonal offerings. Portions are generous and service is a la carte.

Rocco's

If Mill Valley had a sports bar, this would be it. Known for their 18+ varieties of pizza (East Coast style to some, simply thin crust to others) and draft pitchers of beer, the TV is large and tuned to the current game of choice. (You say baseball, I say World Cup.) Groups are common here post-rec and the vibe is dive-a-licious. Pizza is thankfully available by the slice (another clue the owner is an East Coast native) or small/medium/large pies. If cheese and sauce ain't your thing, grab a hamburger or grilled chicken with fries.

Prices: Pizza from $4.18 for a slice to $30.90 for a 16" "Works," sandwiches $6.95.

Hours

Monday - Sunday: 11 am - 10 pm

  • Cuisine: pizza, sports bar hamburgers and chicken

Antigua Mexican Grill

In the old Peking Wok space but radically redone with bright orange walls and matching leather chairs, you just might have found a little slice of ol' Mejico. The menu features such "norteño" standards as burritos, fajitas and carnitas made with fresh, local when possible ingredients and sustainable meats. Smoky and deeply flavorful, the chicken mole is a stand out. But Mexican places live and die over their tortillas and Antigua meets the challenge with fresh-pressed, soft and chewy corn or wheat tortillas. If ordering take-out, be sure to check your order before you leave as special requests in English do not always translate to "kitchen."

Prices: Regular burrito $6.25, Combination Plates from $6.50- $12, entrees from $12.95-$24.95.

Hours

Monday - Saturday: 11 am - 9:30 pm

Sunday: 4:30 - 9 pm

  • Cuisine: classic Mexican-American
  • Features: kids menu, all day food, organic, sangría
  • Atmosphere: casual
