MMWD Offers Education Programs to Encourage Environmental Stewardship

The Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) has announced plans to continue free water education programs for Marin schools this year, after successful participation during 2012-13. Teachers and school administrators can sign-up now.

Programs include field trips to the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed, musical assemblies, classroom presentations, water quality lab tours and service learning opportunities. In addition, a “Trout in the Classroom” program is offered in partnership with North Bay Trout Unlimited, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project.

MMWD explained in a press release that they are pleased to offer free, fun-filled and memorable water education programs for schools in their service area during the 2013-14 school year.

Bilingual (Spanish-English) assemblies and classroom presentations are available. The water district also offers a limited number of school bus reimbursement grants to help schools cover the cost of a field trip to the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed.

MMWD’s education programs provide opportunities for students to discover where their water comes from and to gain hands-on experience in watershed ecology and habitat restoration. All programs are designed to support California education standards while fostering water conservation and environmental stewardship.

Last year the program was able to reach out to nearly 12,000 K-12 students, parents and teachers, extending to 30 public and private schools in Marin.
