Viewfinder: Scrabble, Veggies and the Mt. Tam Fire Lookout

A short hike to the fire lookout on Mount Tam offers outstanding views of Marin County and the Bay Area; local backyard farmers exchange excess produce; and Mill Valley residents put on their thinking-caps during a local Scrabble Tournament

This week our Viewfinder hiked to the Fire Lookout at the top of Mount Tam for a spectacular view and a chance meeting with volunteer and retired Marin County Fireman Pat Williams, who has spent much of the last 45 years at the lookout.

On Saturday, our Viewfinder captured exchanging their excess fruits, vegetables, flowers, seeds, and other goodies with other gardeners that had excesses of other crops. The event organized by the Marin Open Garden Project seemed to be an excellent way to get rid of all your apples or any other garden produce that seems to all ripen at the same time and that you cannot possibility consume yourself. The garden exchange event is in its third year and takes place every Saturday at Boyle Park and Volunteer Park in Homestead Valley.

Also this week, the held its second scrabble tournament of the year. This week’s event was won by Andrew Laurence of Alameda who defeated Charlotte Jenkins of Mill Valley in a very close match with a total score of 944 to 940.
