Throckmorton Churns Out Comedy CD

Mark Pitta and Friends celebrates popular five-year-old Tuesday night improv, hoping to raise money for nonprofit theatre.

If Mark Pitta has his way, your donation to the 142 Throckmorton Theatre will definitely be a laughing matter.

In an effort to both celebrate the Tuesday night improv comedy show that Pitta has overseen for the past five years and to raise money for the nonprofit theater, 142 Throckmorton has produced the first of what it said will be several CDs on the way.

Mark Pitta and Friends: The Best of Tuesday Night Comedy is a compilation of the standout performances from the weekly showcase featuring stand-up, sketches, improv, music, and video. The two-disc set includes performances from Richard Lewis, Quinn Dale, Larry Miller, Kevin Meaney, Arj Barker, Mort Sahl, Bobcat Goldthwait, Dana Carvey, Greg Behrendt, Kevin Pollak, David Feldman, Maria Bamford, Rick Overton, Bobby Slayton and Roy Zimmerman.

"We've produced Tuesday Night Comedy with Mark Pitta and Friends for over five years and have watched the series become a huge hit with audiences," said Lucy Mercer, the theater's executive director, in a statement. "The phenomenal talent of world-class comedians and material that's been seen on our stage made it a no brainer for our first CD release."

Pitta, who hawked the CD at the Comedy on the Plaza event last month, called the project a "labor of love."

"I wanted the best material on the CD so I took special care in selecting all the acts," he said. "I'm very proud of what we have produced."

The CDs are on sale now in the 142 Thorckmorton Theatre lobby for $20 apiece. All proceeds benefit 142 Throckmorton Theatre and their various programs. Visit the theater's Web site or call 383-9600 for more information.
