Hitchcock's 'The Birds' Kicks Off Classic Film Series at Sequoia

Series coinciding with Universal Pictures' 100th anniversary will also include retouched versions of 'Frankenstein,' 'The Bride of Frankenstein and 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'

Old-fashioned thrill-seekers in Mill Valley are in for a treat starting Wednesday, with a series of classic movie screenings planned at local theaters over the next few months.

Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 horror film The Birds kick off the series of four newly restored films, which are being screened nationwide, including at the Cinearts at Sequoia Theatre in downtown Mill Valley and nearly two-dozen Bay Area theaters.

The series coincides with Universal Pictures' 100th anniversary. The Birds, filmed in Bodega Bay, will be screened at theaters in Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, Marin and Napa counties.

The screenings begin at 7 p.m. today at selected theaters, including the Sequoia as well theaters in Sausalito and San Rafael.

On Oct. 24, in time for Halloween, retouched versions of Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein will be screened.

The fourth film, To Kill a Mockingbird, will be shown on Nov. 15.

The four films are presented on behalf of Turner Classic Movies and will include a filmed introduction by TCM host and movie buff Robert Osborne.
