Straight to Hell Returns- Filmmaker Alex Cox in Person

Filmmaker Alex Cox in Person

Celebrate Day of the Dead with legendary indie filmmaker Alex Cox, who will present and discuss Straight to Hell Returns, his newly revised version of Straight to Hell, the 1987 comic rock 'n' roll homage to spaghetti westerns originally promoted as "a story of blood, money, guns, coffee and sexual tension." Starring Sy Richardson, Joe Strummer, Dick Rude and Courtney Love, with special appearances by The Pogues, Elvis Costello, Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones, Edward Tudor-Pole and Jim Jarmusch, this absurdist satire concerns four hapless bank robbers who flee to the desert and encounter a town filled with deadly coffee-addicted cowboys. Mayhem ensues. Soundtrack music is by Pray for Rain, The Pogues, Joe Strummer and Elvis Costello.

Best known for the cult classics Repo Man and Sid and Nancy, Alex Cox has directed movies in the U.S., Mexico and his native England. Straight to Hell was filmed on locations in Almería, Spain, that had served many of the Italian westerns Cox admires and wrote about in his book 10,000 Ways to Die. For 2010's Straight to Hell Returns, Cox supervised digital adjustments to the original and promises "enhanced violence and cruelty, and additional shots by cinematographer Tom Richmond." Program 86 min. plus discussion.
