On The Waterfront

Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) dreams of being a boxing champ but is betrayed by his brother Charley (Rod Steiger) lawyer for mob boss, Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) who controls the loading docks. The Waterfront Crime Commission is investigating a series of murders linked to Friendly. But no one dares testify against him. Terry is used by his brother to set up the ambush of a potential witness, fellow dockworker Joey Doyle (Ben Wagner). Reluctantly involved in the murder, Terry meets and is smitten by Doyle's sister, Edie (Eva Marie Saint) who has convinced the local waterfront priest, Father Barry (Karl Malden) into taking on the mob. Terry eventually testifies and is blackballed on the docks. Terry and Friendly get into a vicious brawl, and Terry is brutally beaten by Friendly's mob goons. But the dockworkers refuse to work unless Terry is also hired. Screenplay by Bud Schulberg, Musical Score by Leonard Bernstein. The film won 8 Oscars.
