My Dog Tulip

Based on J.R. Ackerley's 1956 memoir, this witty and touching animation for adults recounts the author's 14-year relationship with an unruly, undisciplined but beautiful Alsatian bitch. The distinguished British man of letters was well into middle age when Tulip came to him, and to his surprise, she turned out to be the love of his life, the "ideal friend" for whom he had searched in vain so many years. Christopher Plummer elegantly performs Ackerley's narration, Lynn Redgrave voices his sister Nancy, and Isabella Rossellini portrays a perceptive veterinarian. With narrative discussion of such bodily functions as defecation and mating, My Dog Tulip is directed toward mature audiences, but it remains warm and whimsical throughout. It's the first animated feature to be entirely hand-drawn and painted utilizing paperless computer technology. Animators/Directors: Paul and Sandra Fierlinger. (US 2009) 82 min.
