Mill Valley Native Talks Jeans, Fashion Stereotypes in Southern Marin

Claudia Shapiro has been living near the Depot since infancy. The Blues Jean Bar employee talks about her personal style and what she loves about Mill Valley.

Class of 2012  grad Claudia Shapiro is heading to the University of Wisconsin at Madison as a third generation Badger this fall. She plans to major in communication arts with a focus on radio, film and television and to complete a minor in criminal justice.

Shapiro was an active participant on  and contributed to its as a defense attorney. Outside of school, Shapiro stays busy singing, acting, and working. We caught up with her downtown to learn about her personal style.

Mill Valley Patch: What are some of your favorite things to do in Mill Valley?
Claudia Shapiro: Sometimes I sing at open mic at the . I like going to the pool at the with my girlfriends and hanging out downtown. Since Mill Valley is so small everyone seems to know everyone, so walking around or going to the market is a community activity all by itself.

MVP: How long have you worked at the Blues Jean Bar shop downtown?
CS: I've been there since September 2011. Jeans are a staple of my wardrobe, and since I work at the store I get a discount, which is dangerous for me since I wear jeans almost every day if the weather is right.

MVP: So you must know a lot about jeans?
CS: I have extreme product knowledge. I know way too much about jeans. The store has over 40 brands, but some of my favorites are Henry and Belle, James Jeans and Paige Denim.

MVP: How would you describe your personal style?
CS: It varies season by season, but I would say I like practical fashion or practical style. I'm short, so I wear heels a lot, but comfortable heels. I like to look put together but with things that I'm comfortable wearing. Jeans are a staple, and shoes or a jacket might create the vibe of an outfit.

MVP: Do you see any fashion trends in Mill Valley these days?
CS: Well, there's always the joke that the typical Mill Valley lady wears yoga pants, has an iPod and is toting either a small dog or a small child, and you do see a lot of that. But I also think you see a wide variety of style. I like seeing some of the hippie style from people who have been here a long time. There's definitely a Mill Valley vibe, but I don't know how to explain it. Of course you have all the bikers in their spandex, but that's a whole different thing.

MVP: Can you give me the run-down of what you're wearing now?
CS: Henry and Belle super skinny onyx wash jeans, Steve Madden lace-up boots, a black blouse from Italy, a military inspired jacket from H&M, and I'm carrying a red bag from Longchamp.

I've also noticed large numbers of people out and about enjoying the warm weather.

Slow and go modern roundabout intersections means less delay than a stop light or stop sign,Read More especially the other 20 hours a day people aren’t driving to or from work. Average daily delay at a signal is around 12 seconds per car. At a modern roundabout average delay is less than five seconds.

So, the traffic circles do impede traffic flow and slow motorists down. I do question why the CityRead More of M.V. decided to put a painted traffic circle at an isolated intersection like Cascade and Old Mill. There is not a high volume of traffic at that isolated intersection, and I haven't seen any reports of traffic accidents, injuries or deaths at that intersection. If people use common sense, it's real easy to figure out what to do at that intersection, even with no STOP signs. Perhaps the City of M.V. should remove the traffic circle, and do some more $tudie$. Maybe a STOP sign on Cascade Dr. would be a better solution.

I am aware of roundabouts in large cities, and also the concrete island at the library and near OldRead More Mill School. I know someone who lost his son at that location because of a speeding driver(decades ago).

I guess I can't hit the enter button because that submits the post so from now on (until they fixRead More the problem), all of my posts will be one paragraph. What Angelina did was her choice, based on the multi-billion dollar per cancer industry, and by the people that like do unnecessary surgeries to line their pockets. Ask one of those male doctors if he is willing to have his testicles removed "just in case" he might get testicular cancer in the future. I'll bet that they would laugh at anyone who proposed that question. There are many ways that people can take care of their bodies to prevent cancer, like taking vitamin D, magnesium, selenium, turmeric and many more anti-inflammatory herbs. Also diet and environmental factors play a role in the pre-disposition to get cancer. In most cases, genes only play about a 5% role in a chance of inheriting or contracting cancer. But this big business of cancer research doesn't want hear about anything else besides expensive pharmaceutical drugs and surgery, anything else would threaten their business model. This post is a test of the new Patch commenting system.

Thanks Jim W. for your reply and explaining things to us. I look forward to a new Patch where peopleRead More are more considerate of other's opinions. I hope the new filters get rid of the hacker/trolls. And by the way, if you don't port over the comments about the transgender shower sharing article that I glanced at last night, you will be doing all of us a favor !

Thanks Rico. You make great points. We had a bit of a tech glitch in that some content from earlierRead More this week did not migrate over yet to the new sites - but it'll all be there soon. And yes, we'll have more info on how to navigate the site. I'll direct you here with any specific questions for now: https://patchsupport.zendesk.com/home But if that doesn't cover it or if you'd prefer to ask me, feel free - happy to help. And that goes for anyone out there with a question about how to get around on the new site.
