Concerts in the Plaza Kicks Off Saturday

Annual series celebrates its 25th anniversary with four afternoons of free music in the Depot Plaza.

A 25-year-old Mill Valley tradition continues tomorrow as the Art Commission's free Concerts in the Plaza series kicks off the first of four concerts.

North Bay-based folk-rock group Solid Air gets its started Saturday at 3pm. Solid Air is led by founders Allegra Broughton and Sam Page. The band performs as an acoustic duo/trio as well as a four-piece playing both original songs and classics by the Beatles, Van Morrison, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Chris Isaak and Patsy Cline. For Saturday's set, the pair will be joined by Vic Carberry on drums and Steve Barbieri on vocals & guitars.

The Golden Gate Brass Brand follows at 4pm. The all-brass ensemble plays music from a wide range of brass band traditions, including both the British and Civil War traditions. The band's latest album is called Classic Brass Favorites, Around the World & Through The Ages.

"Historically the GGBB revisits the music of the Baroque with Handel's 'Water Music,' then returns home to America's Civil War with the beautiful 'Ashokan Farewell' from Ken Burns' PBS documentary series," the band said on its Web site.

The concert series will resume Wednesday at 6pm with a set of Afro-Cuban jazz from Cuban sonero Fito Reinoso. On Aug. 18, Fishtank Ensemble will play at 6pm, with the Gentry Bronson Band and Mindy Canter & the Groundbreakers to follow on Aug. 21 at 3pm and 4pm, respectively.
