Mill Valley Encouraging Students to Walk, Bike to School This Week

All Mill Valley public schools are involved in National Walk and Bike Day.

The following is a news release from the city of Mill Valley:

Since 2000, California has seen rates of walking, bicycling, and transit use doubled and the driving rate decreased 11% according to the California Household Travel Survey. A report on the comprehensive travel survey results was completed in June of 2013 but was just announced by Caltrans this week.

Walking rates jumped from 8.8% to 16.6%, bicycling rates increased from 0.8% to 1.5%, and transit use increased from 2.2% to 4.4% of mode share.  In total, trips by foot, bicycle, or transit total nearly 23% of all trips statewide on an average day in California.  This shift indicates the rising demand for transportation options in walkable and bike-able communities and accompanies a rising awareness of serious climate change, health, and equity challenges.

All Mill Valley public schools are involved in National Walk and Bike Day.  The attached map shows the participating schools and their "travel plans" for May 7th and contact information for your participation.

Mill Valley Middle School

Mill Valley Middle School is participating in National Bike to School Day on May 7th.  In addition, they are doing a Bike, Walk and Carpool Challenge from May 12 - May 23.  Please advise drivers in the Sycamore Park area to drive carefully and to be very aware of children walking and biking to school or to avoid Sycamore Avenue during school commute times (between 8:00 - 8:20).

On May 17, from 10 - 2, Student Council is also doing a Bike Drive.  They are collaborating with Safe Routes to Schools which has a partnership with San Quentin Prison and their inmates will be refurbishing the bikes. The bikes will become available to low-income families in San Rafael this summer/fall as part of a grant for SR2S to provide bike education (via Women on Wheels) to underserved moms. Additionally, their kids will receive training through bike rodeos.
