East Blithedale Construction Entering Home Stretch

The construction project is set to wrap up the week of September 2.

The gas line work between Elm and Mesa has been completed, crews have installed 2,500 feet of new sewer mains, connected about 40 properties to the new line so far, and also installed 14 new manholes on East Blithedale.

The project is entering its home stretch, but it will be business as usual for residents. Drivers should continue to avoid East Blithedale and expect delays when on the road, and should use either Camino Alto or Miller Ave. as alternative routes.

Lane closures between 200 - 300 feet will continue between Mesa and Alta Vista avenues, and concrete and asphalt paving crews are repairing trench line areas that were broken out for the sewer installation.

Despite a few rain delaysgas leaks and cave-ins along the way, the project has been relatively smooth and is set to wind down the week of September 2 — about two weeks past the Aug. 23 anticipated deadline.

The project itself is meant as a temporary fix prior a major overhaul of East Blithedale scheduled to start in 2018 – once the $20 million Miller Avenue Streetscape Plan is complete.

The overall cost of the interim repairs is $750,000, plus a 20 percent contingency that brings the total to $900,000. It will be paid for through the city’s Municipal Services Tax, which provides $1.2 million a year for road rehabilitations.

What to expect for the week of:

  • August 12: The sewer construction crews will finish connecting the existing house sewer laterals to the new sewer main. The concrete repairs to the sidewalks and driveways damaged by the construction will continue and will finish after all sewer lateral connections have been made.
  • August 18: The asphalt paving crew will finish patching the street
  • August 21: The pavement resurfacing of East Blithedale Avenue will begin
  • September 2: Crewmembers will place the traffic stripes on East Blithedale
