A Roof Full of Ominous Beasts

Turkey vultures camped out near a piece of roadkill Sunday morning in downtown Novato, prompting quite a site for passersby.

Traffic on De Long Avenue slowed for a little while Sunday morning as people checked out a flock of turkey vultures that had congregated near the corpse of a raccoon.

A couple of drivers stopped to take photos — including this one — while cruising past 804 De Long Ave., a few steps away from Novato City Hall. Somebody took care of the dead raccoon on the sidewalk and the feathered crowd dispersed.

Nothing to see here ... carrion ...

I took some video but decided not to publish it because it was kinda gross.

Wow how exciting (yawn). They patrol our neighborhood regularly, sometimes swooping so close I have to remind myself they don't pick up live cats... Gross? Also ugly. I'm not looking at the photos. The coyotes yipping and howling at night are another thing entirely. True wildness!

Turkey vultures are not "ugly." I invite you to come to WildCare sometime, in San Rafael, and meet one up close. Vladimir is WildCare's wildlife ambassador and when you see him in the sun, with wings spread, you will see how beautiful they really are - their feathers are irridescent with green and purple shining out. They are stunning birds and deserve more appreciation!
