Welcome to the Farmers Market

Eating locally grown, organic produce is better for our bodies, and the environment.

Stepping into my local farmers markets, I always feel welcomed by the bright colors, delicious smells and general sense of abundance, which is only the beginning of the generous gifts they bring forth into my life. We all know that we should be eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and that it’s better for the body (and the environment) when they are organic, locally grown and within season.

The farmers market brings us these locally grown treasures each week, but often also offers up fresh eggs, fish, meats and cheeses. As seen in the above picture, local crafts people can also be found vending at the farmers market. This is one of the oldest, most universally widespread form of direct market, which is great for the local economy and is better for our bodies.

There are many things to love about farmers markets, so I am not at all surprised by the increase in popularity. I feel good knowing where my food was grown, and appreciate being able to forage a relationship each week with the person who owns and works the land where the food was grown. I appreciate that the produce is not only free from harmful chemicals, but that the manner in which it was grown supports the ecosystem and can even improve the soil fertility. “Those were picked this morning, so they’ll last you all week,” the vendor told me. Organic, locally grown and picked this morning? I’m sold!

If you have access to farmers markets, I welcome you to a wonderful experience, and a great way to stock up on the best foods for your body. There is a searchable database that can direct you to farmers markets in your area. Although I did not find it to be fully comprehensive, it is an excellent start. Have an adventure, find new treasures, and meet local farmers. It’s lovely, and the generous quantities of bright beauty you’ll find there should also inspire some creative creations in the kitchen!

Love and Blessings,
