The Mayor's Week in Review (August 26 – Sept. 1)

Andy Berman, Mill Valley's Mayor, writes his weekly review, with some inside news, reminders and reflections, and whatever else comes to mind.

Silent milestones:

I had three last week:

First, the Planning Commission adopted a resolution recommending that the Mill Valley City Council certify the MV2040 draft General Plan, final Environmental Impact Report, and adopt the 2009-2014 Housing Element.  That’s big.  Huge actually.  That helped make for a great week.  Our Council hearings are set for September 16, 18 and 30 (if needed).

The second was having The Hon. Jared Huffman, our US Congressional Representative, come speak to 80 current and former elected officials from the County here in Mill Valley on Wednesday.  Creating a relevant, interesting program for this group is always an important task; Jared was kind enough to accept my invitation.  Then to make this year’s event particularly inclusive and local, I solicited questions from each City for Jared to answer.  A number of folks worked really hard to make this happen – in particular our City Clerk, Kelsey Rogers (HOORAY Kelsey!), and the event was a huge success.  I couldn't have been more pleased with how things transpired.  The questions solicited are attached to this blog, and Jared’s presentation can be viewed here: Jared Huffman in Mill Valley on 28AUG2013It has great information on a number of pressing local issues.

The third was taking Morrissa over to Cal to start school – two off, two still home.  As the Chief says: it’s all good.

What else?

Another good old fashioned ribbon cutting:  Taking a cue from our partner, the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce, we’re having our own Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on September 4 at 1 pm (at the Hauke Park parking lot on Hamilton Drive, by the public safety building) to celebrate the new Electric Vehicle Charging Station and the acquisition of four electric Mitsubishi i-MiEVs.  Everyone’s invited!  I’ll certainly be there along with lots of staff, local agencies, and hopefully YOU.  Read all about it here: Ribbon Cutting.  I promise not to drive the yellow, monster four-wheel drive vehicle blocking my driveway these days to the event.

National Preparedness Month:  September is National Preparedness Month.  Disasters and emergencies affect everyone -- so it takes everyone – parents, youths and all Community members -- to Be Prepared!  (this site helps residents plan and prepare for natural disasters and emergencies).  You can also take the “Preparedness Pledge” and get local training with Marin County’s CERT program at Get CERT-ified.  I’m also reading a Proclamation in recognition of the Month at Tuesday’s Council meeting  . . .  if you are so inclined (no poem this time, but I’ll be back :)).

Final work on East Blithedale:  Yes, we wanted it done by now, but we are really “just about there,” and the outreach, and community cooperation, during this large CIP project has been amazing.  Work crews will place the final traffic striping from Tuesday, September 3 to Thursday, September 5 (the work will take place during school hours to minimize traffic impacts).  Again, thank you all for your patience as we took care of this important infrastructure project.
