'Speak to Me' Features Powerful Lineup For Third Season

Inspirational speakers include: Miss Representation producer Jennifer Siebel Newsom; Common Sense Media co-founder Linda Burch; E! Investigates reporter Laura Ling who was imprisoned in North Korea for 140 days; and radio host and author Rebecca Costa.

In summer of 2010, Marybeth Bond and her 22-year-old daughter road their bikes from California to Virginia, and blogged about the adventure to raise funds and awareness for the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

Bond, a world traveler, founder of GutsyTraveler.com and National Geographic award-winning author of 11 travel books, spoke to a packed room at the Mill Valley Community Center Tuesday as part of the third season of Speak to Me, featuring intelligent, inspiring events for women.

“In the process of discovering the world, I’ve discovered myself and what it means to be a woman,” she said.

Bond is just one of the great voices in the lineup, which includes Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the producer of Miss Representation, a documentary that explores how the media affects our appearance and behavior; Linda Burch, co-founder of Common Sense Media; Laura Ling, the E! Investigates reporter who received worldwide attention when she was imprisoned in North Korea for 140 days; and Rebecca Costa, sociobiologist, nationally syndicated radio host and author of The Watchman’s Rattle: Thinking Our Way Out of Extinction. John Gray, author of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus kicked off the season in October, and the events are spread out through April.

Mill Valley moms Jenny Terry and Tracy Barsotti started Speak to Me in 2010 as a way to offer busy mothers some girl time while educating, inspiring, and socializing with one another.

“From what we hear, one of the best parts of our events is the delicious food, wine and mingle time before our speakers,” Terry said before Tuesday’s event.

In addition to appetizers and drinks from Tiburon Tavern, Champagne Bakery, Etute Wines and more, the evening also included giveaways and a raffle for a helicopter, hiking and massage trip for two.
