Sol Food Slated to Open in Mill Valley

The popular San Rafael restaurant will open on 401 Miller Ave. in February 2013.

It’s official. Sol Food is coming to Mill Valley.

The popular San Rafael restaurant is slated for 401 Miller Ave., in the space recently vacated by Second Breakfast. It will open in February and offer about 20 seats with counter service, eat-in, take-out, pickup and delivery options, along with the same menu as owner Sol Hernandez three other locations, she said in an email.

Hernandez started the eatery at the San Rafael Farmers market, and it's continued to grow since she opened the first restaurant in 2004. There's currently one location at 901 Lincoln Avenue commonly referred to the “Big Place” with communal tables. A block away at 732 Fourth Street, is the “Small Place” with limited counter seating. A third, “La Bodega” opened in February 2011. It boasts the biggest kitchen with no seating and is focused on take-out orders and pre-made food. Last week Sol Food also opened Conchita, a retail store specializing in gifts and home accessories.

The Mill Valley restaurant will be the latest addition to the Sol Food family, and the first location outside San Rafael. When asked about plans to continue to expand Hernandez said there’s “not anything concrete.”

So, why Mill Valley?

“Years of customers begging!” Hernandez said. “Just kidding. It seemed like the logical next step for Sol Food.”

She said the complex behind the Marin Theater Company on Miller Ave is affordable and in a good area, and she’s not worried about any concerns the previous tenant may have had about the visibility of the location.

“We appreciate the warm welcome we’ve received from neighbors and people who work at the building and planning department,” Hernandez said. “We look forward to having a great business in Mill Valley.”
