Car Hits Hydrant, Creating Downtown Geyser

Driver trying to park crashes into hydrant in median on Miller Ave., causing quite a stir Thursday evening.

Downtown Mill Valley was home to its own version of Old Faithful Thursday evening when a car struck a fire hydrant in the median on Miller Avenue just before Sunnyside Avenue, according to Mill Valley Police.

The hydrant collision sent water shooting 30 feet into the air for several minutes, according to Lt. Jacqueline Graf-Reis.

The incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. when the driver of a Toyota Prius slammed into the hydrant while reportedly trying to park. The driver, 55-year-old Lawrence Strick of Mill Valley, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. No one was injured in the incident.

Mill Valley Fire crews were on the scene quickly, Graf-Reis said, and capped the hydrant, which only spouted water for a few minutes. That was plenty of time for people in downtown to grab a look - and some photos - of the short-lived downtown geyser.

Is this a recently installed hydrant from the Waterline Project that Maggiora and Ghilotti is doing? Why are there Hydrants in the median? I thought that I saw one in the median in front of the 2AM Club. I really don't think that it is a wise decision to place fire hydrants in the median. I was thinking that it was just a matter of time.
